The tax period runs from January 31st to March 31st of each year. Payments postmarked by January 31st. are accepted without penalty. A 1% penalty is added for payments that are postmarked by February 28th, and an additional 1% (total of 2%) for payments postmarked by March 31st. The Tax Collector cannot accept any payment that is postmarked after the March 31st. deadline. If the taxes are not paid by the last deadline, the tax lien is returned to the County for collection. An additional 5% penalty is added by the county at this time, and you must contact the Cattaraugus County Treasurer’s Office at (716) 938-9111 for information on the current amount owed and where to send the payment.
A payment schedule detailing the amount owed, along with penalties if not paid by the due date, can be found on the front of each tax bill. If your check has not been signed or filled out correctly and completely it will be returned to you. It is helpful (but not required) to write your phone number on the check. If there is an issue with the payment the Tax Collector will attempt to contact you to try to resolve the issue before additional penalties are added.
School Tax bills are not collected by the Town. The school district that your property is situated in is responsible for collection of the School Tax payments. Any School Tax not paid by the deadline will be added to the upcoming Town/County tax bill and will appear on the bill as “School Relevy”.
